Reminiscent of an American speakeasy, admission and membership was strictly controlled and kept secret. Consequently, Murray's was frequented by London's gangsters, celebrities, royalty and the rich and famous who needed somewhere private to let their hair down. The Kray brothers, Princess Margaret and Jean Harlow were known regulars. Renowned for its choreographed floorshows performed by young attractive girls wearing elaborate and revealing costumes, who were also expected to act as topless hostesses, the club was a magnet for the infamous looking for a good time.

Murray's Cabaret Club, 16-18 Beak St, in London's Soho opened in 1933. An intimate Soho basement with space for 110 guests, by the 1960's it would be at the heart of the most enduring political scandal of our time.
Times changed and more explicit strip clubs and peep shows opened and in the face of such competition the club closed in 1975. "Pops" Murray the owner died in 1979 aged 81. The venue continues to host a nightclub popular with celebrities.
